Como

The city gives his name to the lake and it is the most famous city nestled on the lake: elegant, surrounded by the verdant mountains and overlooking the western branch of the Lake Como. It develops around its Cathedral (Il Duomo), one of the great cathedrals in the northern part of Italy. Interesting is the structure of the city, which resembles an  ancient Roman castrum (the encampment), with orthogonal paths. There are several noteworthy elements in the city: the Medieval Walls, the Sight Towers: the most famous is certainly Porta Torre, but also Torre Gattoni and  Torre San Vitale. The churches of Sant'Abbondio and San Fedele and, built more recently, the “Casa del Fascio” by  Giuseppe Terragni which is a brilliant example of Rationalist Architecture.  Not to be missed is the “Volta Heritage” (Tempio Voltiano) dedicated to Alessandro Volta, born in Como and  inventor of the battery. If you want to enjoy a spectacular view, a funicular connects the city to Brunate.
